A glance at the December issue of The Journal of American Culture: Comic books and gay life

American comic books have added gay life and politics to the long list of socially sensitive issues they address, such as substance abuse, racism, gun control, and poverty, say Valerie Palmer-Mehta and Kellie D. Hay, two assistant professors of communication at Oakland University, in Michigan.

Publishers such as DC Comics and Marvel Comics began introducing minor gay characters in
