Columbia U. Says Academic Freedom Protects Professor's Rock-Throwing
When Edward Said hurled a stone at an Israeli guardhouse from across the Lebanese border in July, he was protected by academic freedom, Columbia University concluded in October. In its first comments on the matter, the university said it would not punish the scholar and Palestinian advocate for his off-campus actions, which some faculty members and students had criticized.
"We do not believe in a speech code at Columbia, nor shall we act as a speech police,"
