Columbia U. Nears Decision on American-History Post; Short List for Harvard U. Presidency Includes Neither Clinton Nor Gore

Two women, Joyce Chaplin, of Harvard University, and Karen O. Kupperman, of New York University, are the leading candidates for the position. Another name, Christine L. Heyrman, of the University of Delaware, has also been bandied about.
But so far, only Ms. Chaplin and Ms.
