Colleges in Providence, R.I., Will Make Payments to City in Lieu of Property Taxes

Years of dissension between the city of Providence, R.I., and its private colleges have ended in an agreement, announced this month, that will add nearly $50-million to the city's coffers over the next 20 years.

The agreement requires Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College, and the Rhode Island School of Design to make payments in lieu of property taxes.
