Colleges in Midwest Try to Make Up for State Shortfalls in Student Aid

Students will begin arriving on campuses in just a few weeks. Some have already received their fall tuition bills, but they may have less aid money coming than they thought. At least three states—Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio—had to adjust their need-based grant programs in recent weeks because they did not receive enough money from the state to meet student demand. Some states have managed to protect their aid programs, but others may still have to make cuts.
