Colleges Offer Condolences, Prayers, and Help in Online Messages

Colleges and universities across the nation have scheduled vigils and prayer services and posted messages of support for Virginia Tech’s grieving students, professors, and staff members.

The university’s Web site includes a short list of institutions that have posted online messages about Monday’s tragedy. But many, many more colleges and universities — from Pomona College in California to the University of Maine at Orono and from the University of Miami to Reed College, in Oregon — have included statements about the horrific killings on their Web sites, sent offers of help, or scheduled solemn services of mourning on their campuses.

“The tragedy at Virginia Tech has brought about a time of personal reflection for many of us, as well as a time for reaching out to one another,” wrote Bill Scoggins, president of the Colorado School of Mines. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families, loved ones, and friends of the victims,” said the chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis, Mark A. Wrighton. The University of Texas at Austin said it would darken its landmark tower, the site of a shooting tragedy in 1966 but also a much-loved symbol of the university, through Thursday night and again next Monday evening. —Lawrence Biemiller
