Colleges Must Emphasize the 'Freeing' Arts
To the Editor:
The diminishing emphasis on arts and sciences at our nation's liberal-arts colleges should be a cause for deep concern, especially during these tough economic times ("Number of Colleges That Fit the 'Liberal Arts' Mold Is Falling, Study Finds," The Chronicle online, April 16).
The challenge is not confined to institutions that meet the authors' definition of liberal-arts colleges. Indeed, all institutions must re-emphasize the transporting promise of the liberal
