Colleges Criticized for Not Using Work-Study Funds for Service

The nation's most highly ranked colleges are, on average, less likely than other institutions to use funds provided by the federal work-study programs to have students perform community service, according to an analysis by The Washington Monthly.

The federal work-study programs provide part-time employment to help students who qualify for financial aid pay for college costs. The government provides about 75 percent of the money, and the colleges pick up the remaining quarter. Until
