College of Santa Fe May Cut Faculty Members

The College of Santa Fe is considering declaring financial exigency, which would allow it to fire tenured faculty members and cut costs in an effort to save the institution, the Associated Press reported.

The college has long struggled to stay open. In November, The Santa Fe New Mexican reported that the college would lay off 20 percent of its faculty, eliminate liberal-arts programs, refocus the college on the creative arts, and restart its athletics program. The newspaper reported that the college was running annual deficits of $2-million to $4-million.

The college has already offered severance packages to more than a dozen faculty members. —Scott Carlson
