Two students at Birmingham-Southern College and one at the University of Alabama at Birmingham were arrested today in connection with arson fires that were set last month at nine churches in western Alabama, the Associated Press is reporting. According to an affidavit by one of the students, they set the fires initially “as a joke,” but “it got out of hand.” Five of the churches were destroyed, but no one was injured.
