In December 2002, Sports Illustrated ran a list of the 100 best books about sports. One can quarrel with some of the editors' choices. But on the whole they did a pretty good job. The editors' criteria were reasonable -- to make the list, a book had to "display all the traits of great literature: incision, wit, force, and vision, suffused with style and substance" -- and for the most part they applied
