College Republicans Catch Themselves on Illegal-Alien 'Game'

The College Republicans at Penn State have backed away from their contribution to the national debate over immigration policy. While a bevy of bills vied for support in the U.S. Congress, and hundreds of thousands of people marched in American cities for immigrant rights, the student group originally laid plans for the “Catch an Illegal Immigrant Game.” According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the game is played between people wearing orange T-shirts, denoting their status as illegal aliens, and everyone else, who is invited to “catch” them.

The goal of the game was to draw attention—in a “creative” way, one College Republican said—to concerns about how easily illegal immigrants can enter the country. Somehow, however, that message was lost on the Penn State campus.

Under fire from critics who called the game insensitive and insulting, the College Republicans set aside their plans and instead will hold an “illegal immigration awareness day,” complete with leafleting and speechifying.
