College President Retires After 2 Decades of Service and a Year of Scandal

The president of Blue Ridge Community College, David W. Sink Jr., said on Tuesday that he would retire in June after 20 years in office and 30 years in the North Carolina Community College System. According to The Asheville Citizen-Times, the college’s enrollment has boomed during his years as president, but his tenure has been tainted since last year by a range of managerial problems. A state audit found that the college had miscalculated and misspent some of its assets, and another audit found that baseball players had improperly received thousands of dollars in work-study payments. The Citizen-Times reported that the college had agreed to repay to North Carolina more than $100,000 that Blue Ridge spent on its sports program, violating a ban on using state money for athletics.
