College Health Centers Urged to Provide More Chlamydia Screening

First-year students under the age of 20 are significantly more likely to test positive for chlamydia than are students ages 20 to 24, according to a study described today in a news release by Emory University’s School of Medicine. The research was based on test results for 800 students at 10 colleges in the Southeast, and doctors concluded that preventive screening for the venereal disease, which often shows no symptoms, should be more common at college health centers. The question of whether or not to test for such diseases is a difficult one for college health officials (The Chronicle, July 15, 2005).
