College Football Player Dies on Training Camp's First Day

A freshman football player at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania died this morning after falling ill during the team’s first official workout of training camp. The player, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound Pennsylvania native named Vince Bernardo, was running sprints when he collapsed, according to a Shippensburg news release. He died within an hour. There was no official word on a cause of death.

College football players die every year or two in training camp, for a variety of reasons but most commonly heat exhaustion. Five years ago, three college athletes died during preseason practices (The Chronicle, August 17, 2001). The deaths raised questions about balance in players’ lives (The Chronicle, September 7, 2001).
