Community-college students throughout the Canadian province of New Brunswick hope to return to classes on Monday, according to CBC News, after striking custodians and the government reached a tentative deal this morning. The 11th-hour agreement came as the government was planning to introduce back-to-work legislation today to force an end to the strike, which began on January 10.
Classes were held for several weeks into the strike, until health concerns from the buildup of garbage forced several campuses to close. Eventually 10 of the 11 New Brunswick Community College campuses closed.
The union announced today that it would hold a ratification vote tomorrow. If the union fails to accept the settlement tomorrow, the government says it will reconvene the legislature on Friday to force the custodians back to work because six thousand students are in danger of falling behind. —Karen Birchard
