College Athletes Graduate at Record Rates

Athletes are graduating at higher rates than ever, acc-ording to an annual report from the National Collegiate Athletic Association being published this week. The report found that more than 62 percent of the Division I scholarship athletes who entered college in 1996 earned their degrees within six years, thanks in large part to tougher academic standards that went into effect that year.

However, the gains appear to be due to the loss of African-American athletes on Division I teams.
