A military jury on Wednesday sentenced the first cadet to be court-martialed in the history of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to six months in prison and expelled him from the service, the Associated Press reported. The jury acquited the cadet, Webster M. Smith of Houston, of rape but found him guilty of sodomy, indecent assault, extortion, and other charges. Mr. Webster, who had asked the jury for leniency, could have faced a jail term of more than five years.
