Coal-Mining Revenues Prove Insufficient to Finance Scholarship Program at U. of Kentucky
With coal prices down, the coal fields that the University of Kentucky was counting on to finance scholarships for some first-generation college students may prove to be a bust.
University leaders will have to find new sources of money for the Robinson Scholars or scale back the popular program. "The problem is the coal has run out and the endowment has shrunk," says Jack Blanton, senior vice president for administration.
