Raymond Burke, the archbishop of St. Louis, is none too pleased with recent comments by Saint Louis University’s men’s basketball coach that conflict with the Roman Catholic Church’s position on stem-cell research and abortion.
The coach, Rick Majerus, declared himself a supporter of abortion rights and of embryonic-stem-cell research at a rally for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Democratic presidential candidate, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Archbishop Burke said he hoped the university would take “appropriate action” against the coach. So far the Jesuit university is standing by Mr. Majerus, saying he was not speaking in an official capacity when he made the comments.
Mr. Majerus, who was hired by Saint Louis last year, had been a commentator for ESPN. In 1998 he led the University of Utah to the NCAA Final Four tournament. —Thomas Bartlett
