Clearing Up Confusion Over Accreditation Groups

In passing, a December 16, 2008, article characterizes the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as "an umbrella group of accreditors" ("Obama to Pick Arne Duncan, Leader of Chicago's Public Schools, as Education Secretary," The Chronicle online). This is inaccurate. Although CHEA conducts a voluntary process for recognition of accrediting organizations, it represents its member institutions, not the accreditation community.
