Classical Music in New Orleans
To the Editor:
When Joseph Horowitz claims that classical music in America started in Boston and New York, he either disregards or has forgotten Louis Moreau Gottschalk and his hometown of New Orleans ("New World Symphony and Discord," The Chronicle Review, January 11).
New Orleans was the site of the first opera performance in what became the United States. It also was home to America's first permanent, full-fledged opera company. And it was the birthplace of Gottschalk, who
