The article by Joseph Horowitz on the past and present of classical music in America is appalling nonsense ("New World Symphony and Discord," The Chronicle Review, January 11). It would be difficult to imagine a more specious, unfair, tendentious, and misleading portrait of this art form in America.

Horowitz cites irrelevant facts out of context, which proves nothing. It is ludicrous to say that classical music is no longer relevant, and to make it seem no longer
