A professor at the University of Arizona has stepped down as interim chairman of the classics department after his colleagues complained that he had given preferential treatment to a university basketball player, the Tucson Citizen reports. But now the professor, Alexander Nava, tells the Citizen that such allegations are false and that the real reason he stepped down was a longstanding split between classics and religious-studies professors, who are housed in the same department. Mr. Nava is a religious-studies professor, and he maintains that the classicists resented him for getting the administrative post.
