Civil-Rights Nominee Faces Tough Grilling in Senate Confirmation Hearing
Gerald A. Reynolds, President Bush's nominee to head the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights, faced stern questioning in a long-delayed confirmation hearing last week from Democratic senators who wonder if he is up to the job.
After putting off the hearing for months, Democratic members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee grilled Mr. Reynolds about the areas that the office oversees, including enforcement of affirmative-action and gender-equity
