Chilean Students, Seeking a Louder Voice on Campuses, Push for a University Senate
Students at Chile's largest public institution are pushing for a law that would establish a university senate, raising fears among politicians that the move could trigger a wave of similar demands on other campuses.
Higher-education reform is a sensitive topic in Chile. Many laws governing the nation's public universities were written by the Pinochet dictatorship shortly after it seized power in a 1973 coup. The regime wanted to prevent leftist resistance.
