Chile to Create Loans for Private U.'s
Chile plans to create a loan-guarantee program for students at private universities, despite protests from student groups at public institutions.
The proposal, which has passed both houses of the Chilean Congress, will create an 8-billion-peso ($13.7-million) fund to guarantee loans to students at private universities accredited by the government. The system is modeled in part on the Sallie Mae loan program in the United States, as well as on programs in Europe and Australia, said
