For me, the University of Iowa's Special Collections library is a treasure cave. The first cold day I visited, when I saw the plain, dark-leather cover of the 1633 edition of John Donne's Poems, something inside me melted. Since then, artists' books and shelves of writing about French cooking are among the delights that have distracted me, at least for a time, from Iowa's formidable winters.
