Charges of Unethical Conduct in Research in the Amazon

I am writing to express the University of Michigan's grave concerns about the accuracy of allegations reported to be in the forthcoming book Darkness in El Dorado: How Scientists and Journalists Devastated the Amazon ("Allegations of Misconduct Roil Anthropologists," September 29). Although we have not yet seen the book, we have begun an internal inquiry that already has turned up significant materials directly refuting a number of the claims that are circulating. For
