Acting on a request from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit, a federal judge has dismissed criminal charges against a University of Toledo football player accused of recruiting football and basketball players for a point-shaving scheme. But the Federal Bureau of Investigation will continue looking into the gambling ring in which the student, Harvey McDougle Jr., is alleged to have played a part.
Mr. McDougle may not be out of the woods just yet. Prosecutors asked that the charges be dismissed so they could gather more evidence about participants in the scheme, which is said to have been masterminded by a man in the Detroit area. Mr. McDougle may be charged again when law-enforcement officials decide to prosecute the case more broadly, according to the Detroit Free Press. —Brock Read
