Changes in Jewish Studies

To the Editor:

I write to protest Scott Heller's report of the speech I delivered at the annual convention of the Association for Jewish Studies in Boston on December 21, 1998 ("The New Jewish Studies: Defying Tradition and Easy Categorization," January 29). I find Mr. Heller's portrayal of my speech to be inaccurate and unfair.

The speech was indeed provocative and its content quite controversial.
