Challenger Who Promised More Money for Colleges Wins Kentucky Governor's Race
Steve Beshear, a Democrat who campaigned on a pledge to make college within reach of more Kentuckians, easily ousted the incumbent governor, Ernie Fletcher, by garnering 59 percent of the vote in last week's elections.
In the other gubernatorial contest decided last week, Mississippi's Republican governor, Haley Barbour, defeated his Democratic challenger, John Arthur Eaves Jr., to win a second term. Elsewhere, voters in Maine, Texas, and Washington State approved ballot measures
