Chairman of Humanities Endowment and Others Defend the Agency's Support for Scholarship

The Chronicle's recent article on the National Endowment for the Humanities contains misleading and inaccurate information about the agency and about my tenure as chairman ("Scholars Fear Humanities Endowment Is Being Dumbed Down," October 6). In particular, the article suggests that we have failed to increase financial support for humanities research, and that our support for public programs in the humanities drains resources that would otherwise fund research by
