Celebrations of Identity Complement Official Commencements
The cap and gown, the formal procession, the flipping of the tassel—they're "what you go to school for," says Shirley Diaz, who graduated from the University of Nevada at Reno last year. But the traditional commencement can be a little stiff, she says. That's why she also attended the Latino graduation at Reno's Center for Student Cultural Diversity, where people ate and danced, and each graduate was called up by name.
