Celebrations With a Conscience
To the Editor:
JJ Hermes's recent article on inaugurations ("At Inaugural Galas, Nothing Succeeds Like Excess," The Chronicle, June 20) raised the important issue of how such events can turn into over-the-top celebrations that put more focus on black-tie galas than on education — often at significant expense to institutions. However, the article did not discuss how my institution, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, successfully avoided excess.
