The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has declared that two pamphlets written by a theologian at Marquette University are “false teaching,” The New York Times reported today.
The pamphlets assert that birth control, abortion, and gay marriage are acceptable under church doctrine. The author of the pamphlets is Daniel C. Maguire, 75, a tenured professor who has been outspoken on those topics for years. The university issued a statement agreeing with the bishops that the pamphlets were contrary to Catholic teaching. The statement acknowledged, however, that Mr. Maguire has “rights related to his academic discipline.” —Thomas Bartlett
