Case Closed, Says College President Accused of Punching a Builder

Misdemeanor battery charges filed in Indiana against Michael Mace, president of Rocky Mountain College, have been resolved out of court, The Billings Gazette reported. Mr. Mace told the Montana newspaper he had agreed to pay court costs of $305, continue seeing a counselor to discuss anger management, and complete 40 hours of community service as part of a procedure called a pretrial diversion. If all conditions are met, the charges will be removed from the record in one year.

A builder and developer, David Klain, had accused Mr. Mace of hitting him and knocking him down during an argument over repairs on a townhouse owned by the college president in a suburb of Indianapolis. But Mr. Mace disputed that description of the altercation. “What the developer said I did, I did not do,” he told the newspaper on Friday. He said he had been trying to get the developer to complete repairs for months. “I did not punch him. I did not knock him down. In frustration, I pushed him. I meant him no harm.”

Trustees of the Billings, Mont., college have supported Mr. Mace, who also apologized for the incident and the embarrassment it had caused the college. Thorm Forseth, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said he considered the matter “a done deal.” —Charles Huckabee
