Subra Suresh, president of Carnegie Mellon University, was one of 70 people who were elected members of the Institute of Medicine this year.
That makes him the only current university president and one of only 16 living Americans who are members of all three National Academies, the university says. Mr. Suresh is already a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering.
The most recent honor recognizes his research into cell mechanics related to malaria, blood diseases, and some types of cancer. Before joining Carnegie Mellon, in July, Mr. Suresh was director of the National Science Foundation for two and a half years. Previously he was a professor of engineering and dean of engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
