Carleton President Proposes NCAA Division for Liberal-Arts Colleges
Maybe the country's best small colleges need a league of their own.
Or even a whole division in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. That's what Stephen R. Lewis Jr. thinks.
Mr. Lewis, president of Carleton College, is tired of what he sees as an excessive emphasis on national championships, seasons that run on too long, and the vast and amorphous nature of the NCAA's Division III, the largest of the association's three sections. Division III already forbids athletics
