Careers in Academe for Minority Students
To the Editor:
The issue of getting students from minority groups to pursue doctorates and careers in the academy involves many unanswered questions ("Opening the Door to a Doctorate," The Chronicle, August 13).
The fact that Harwood K. McClerking was 32 years old before he "heard of people actually getting Ph.D.'s" is rather astonishing. It certainly raises questions about the counseling that minority students are receiving in high school and college.
