Washington — The U.S. Department of Education has, for now, filled one of two key posts relating to higher education with a longtime department analyst.
Daniel T. Madzelan, who has been with the department since 1978, has been named acting assistant secretary for postsecondary education, where he will be in charge of administering most of the agency’s programs for colleges and students.
Mr. Madzelan’s most recent job, as director of forecasting and analysis, was to develop the department’s annual budget request for student financial aid and to direct major policy studies in that area.
In addition to filling the assistant-secretary post permanently, Education Secretary Arne Duncan also must pick an under secretary for education, who oversees policies, programs, and activities related to postsecondary education, vocational and adult education, and federal student aid.
The acting under secretary is Vicky L. Schray, another career official in the department. —Eric Kelderman
