Captivated by Cops
I don't know why I chose to study the police when I was in graduate school. Perhaps there is truth in the expression that opposites attract. I was a young woman from an educated, middle-class, liberal-democratic family who filled my sometimes lonely high-school days reading Faulkner, Freud, and Marx. In college, I marched against the war in Vietnam.
Most of the police I studied during my first year of fieldwork in New York City, on the other hand, were working-class Irish and Italian
