Can't Get No Satisfaction
To the Editor:
There were so many outrageous statements in Gordon Marino's "In Praise of Disappointment" (The Chronicle Review, June 27) that it's hard not to believe his tongue was set firmly in his cheek as he wrote the essay. Think of life as a penal colony? Complaining doesn't change anything? And the most egregious — to me, as someone who studies positive psychology — "there is not a silver lining of meaning to every cloud of suffering"?
