York University, in Toronto, announced on Thursday that it had settled a lawsuit filed against its president, Lorna R. Marsden, by a student, Daniel Freeman-Maloy. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. In the lawsuit, Mr. Freeman-Maloy had sought a payment of 850,000 Canadian dollars, or about $767,000.
The Canadian university suspended Mr. Freeman-Maloy, an ardent defender of Palestinian rights, for three years for taking part in an unauthorized demonstration that disrupted classes on the campus in 2004. The suspension was lifted a few months later, but Mr. Freeman-Maloy then sued Ms. Marsden. Subsequent legal maneuvering has consumed the three years since. —Karen Birchard
