Canadian Observer of Assisted Suicides Is Allowed to Resume Research

The sociologist Russel Ogden and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, with the help of a blue-ribbon panel, have reached an agreement that allows the professor to resume his research into suicides and assisted suicides, according to a report in the newsletter published by the Canadian Association of University Teachers. The asssociation convened the panel after the Vancouver-area university halted the research last summer, despite approval from an ethics board that allowed Mr. Ogden to observe illegal assisted suicides. The university said it had stopped the research on the basis of legal advice, but many commentators pointed out that it was not illegal to observe illegal behavior. —Karen Birchard
