California's 2-Year Colleges Urge Governor to Reinstate Funds He Vetoed

Community-college officials in California are pressing Gov. Gray Davis, a Democrat, to restore $98-million that he vetoed from the 2001-2 budget of the college system in July.

The 11th-hour cut shocked officials of the 108-college system. The reduction came from funds earmarked for instructional equipment and building repairs. If the money is not restored, the two-year colleges would have to deplete their reserves.
