The University of California’s regents approved plans on Thursday to increase their financial oversight of the system president’s office as they attempt to deal with a continuing uproar from state lawmakers and the public over the high pay and generous perks awarded to top executives at the university, the Los Angeles Times reported today.
According to the Times, the Board of Regents will hire an independent compliance officer to report to it directly on the office of the president, Robert C. Dynes, and a chief financial officer, chief operating officer, or both may be hired as well. The news followed by three weeks an appearance before state lawmakers by the board chairman, Gerald L. Parsky, who said the president needs more lieutenants with business-management experience to improve operations of the 10-campus system (The Chronicle, February 23).
