California Man Pleads Guilty in Hoax That Threatened San Diego State U. Students

A 32-year-old California man pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday to charges stemming from an April hoax in which he posted an online threat to kill 50 San Diego State University students.

The man, Cristobal Fernando Gonzalez, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison, along with a $250,000 fine, according to the Associated Press. Mr. Gonzalez, a Web designer, admitted to investigators that he had posted the supposedly anonymous threat to his own Web site shortly after the Virginia Tech killings. Then, in hopes of drawing traffic to his site, he alerted local TV stations to the posting. —Lawrence Biemiller
