California Law Requires Colleges to Work Out Duties With Police

A new California law requires all public and private colleges to reach written agreements with local police departments describing which agency will investigate certain violent crimes.

The law, which Gov. Pete Wilson signed in August, is intended to deal with concerns raised about the way police handled the 1996 disappearance of a student at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo.
