A California community college’s deal to sell its unwanted Canadian island appears to have failed, acording to the Orange County Register. Orange Coast College’s $2.3-million sale of Rabbit Island, a 40-acre property off the coast of British Columbia, fell through when the buyer was unable to put together the financing he needed for the deal, the newspaper said. The island was donated in 2002 to the college, which initially planned to use it for researchers to study its flora and fauna, including bald eagles. But the high cost of maintaining the island brought to mind a different avian species — the albatross — and the college sought to sell it. The property is now back on the market. —Andrew Mytelka
